At approximately 5:30am an explosion rocked the coal mine while ninety-nine miners were inside.

Twelve miners were able to be rescued, but the other seventy-eight were trapped, and died. Nineteen bodies were never recovered.

The cause of the disaster was never discovered, and the mine was permanently sealed. Though the cause might not be known, the disaster led to reform in America’s mining industry.
