Ludmilla was my teacher, mentor, and friend. She was really the first American-born ballerina to have an international career. She was a mere 13, when she became the premier ballerina of the Chicago Opera, and then went on to dance in Europe. She was the first ‘Pomona’, with Freddie Ashton…etc. Lots of memories. How lovely to see her featured here. This is an image that I have never seen.

I can’t remember how I even came across this picture!

She sounds like a fascinating woman. My former ballet school was founded by a well-known ballerina, but I don’t think many people paid the attention to her past she deserved.

I think the age of the baby ballerina is well and truly over. The last one I know of is Katherine Healy in the 1980s.
