On this day: A child marriage in 1478

A 19th century painting of the event by James Northcote

On the 15th of January, 1478, Anne de Mowbray, 8th Countess of Norfolk was married to Richard of Shrewsbury, 1st Duke of York. She was five years old at the time, and he around four (notice how the artist painted him as much bigger even though it wouldn’t have been the case).

Neither child would live to have a proper marriage, as Anne died at age eight, while Richard was to become one of the Princes in the Tower and disappeared five years after his wedding.

In 1965, Anne’s grave was accidentally dug up. It was reported she still had her red hair.
