On this day: the First Transcontinental Railroad

The Last Spike of the USA’s First Continental Railroad was driven in at Promontory Summit, Utah on the 10th of May, 1869. In this image, people gather at the ceremony to celebrate the completion of the work on the railroad.

Two sides of the railway join up. The liquor bottles were removed from later versions of the image, due to the increasing temperance movement.
