On this day: Survivors in the Second World War

These images show survivors of the sinking of the Nazi German battleship Scharnhorst, after being rescued and kept prisoner on board Britain’s HMS Duke of York.

Sunk during the Battle of the North Cape on the 26th of December, 1943, only 36 of a 1968-man crew were rescued. The first image shows an injured German being transported for medical treatment. The second image shows other survivors under guard.
