This photograph was taken in London on the 22nd of June, 1897. Queen Victoria, then aged seventy-eight, takes part in a procession in honour of her Diamond Jubilee – sixty years on the British throne.
The Queen would die less than four years after this image was taken.
Essex County Cricket Club was founded at a meeting in Chelmsford‘s Shire Hall on the 14th of January, 1876.

The sport of cricket had been in the area since some time in the 16th century, but no major teams were organised until the late Victorian era. Essex CCC became First-Class in 1894.
Most of the team’s home games are played in Chelmsford, the county town of Essex.
Auguste and Louis Lumière, better known as the “Lumière Brothers“, released a film titled Le Squelette Joyeux in 1898. It features a skeleton that dances joyously even as it falls apart and puts itself back together.
The Blackwall Tunnel, which runs under the River Thames in London, was opened by the Prince of Wales on the 22nd of May, 1897.

Work began on the tunnel in 1892 and construction cost £1.4 M. 800 men were employed and seven deaths were recorded.

On the 25th of March, 1807, the world’s first passenger railway opened in Britain.
The Swansea and Mumbles Railway operated in Wales until 1960. The passenger cars were originally pulled by horses before being changed to steam locomotives, and then finally to electric trams.
Margate is a seaside town in Kent, England. This is a photochrom of the harbour, created between 1890 and 1900. It is credited in some places as 1897.
The Naval War College in the United States was founded in Newport, Rhode Island on the 6th of October, 1884.
