23rd December 1953: Australian soldiers finish decorating a Christmas tree near the new border between North and South Korea. The tree is decorated with electric lights, to be powered by a generator.
The Korean War ended earlier that year, in July. 17 000 Australians served in Korea between 1950 and 1953.

This Christmas tree image was taken in Hungary in 1940. In November of the same year the country had joined the Axis Powers, and remained both staunchly pro-German and fascist throughout the Second World War.
Mrs Devereux and her twelve-year-old daughter Jean at their home in Pinner, Middlesex, England in December of 1944.
The Christmas tree was a present from Mr Devereux, who was serving overseas in the war, and was organised through a YMCA initiative.

The girl cutting the cake is Jean Devereux, and her father was serving in the war in Italy at the time. The tree is a gift from him, purchased through the “Gifts to Home League” which was operated by the YMCA.
